Equipment Stewardship

A practical care manual—extend the life of gear you already carry, without pushing new purchases.

Principles

Repair Before Replace

These steps are general maintenance suggestions. Adjust for your materials and local conditions.

Waterproofing Canvas Boots

Brush off dry soil. Apply a thin, even wax or compatible water-repellent suited to canvas. Warm gently with a hair dryer on low to help absorption. Dry overnight away from direct heat. Reapply after three wet outings or when water no longer beads.

Removing Trail Salt from Wool Socks

Rinse in cool water without rubbing aggressively. Soak fifteen minutes in mild wool-safe detergent. Rinse until water runs clear. Press moisture out with a towel—do not wring. Lay flat to dry. Store only when fully dry to avoid odor.

Fitting a Backpack Harness

Loosen all straps. Pack as you would for a walk. Buckle hip belt first so load sits on hips. Tighten shoulder straps until snug—not digging. Adjust sternum strap to comfortable height. Walk five minutes and fine-tune to reduce shoulder pull.

Storage

Between Walk Seasons

Store boots with newspaper to absorb moisture. Hang packs uncompressed. Air wool layers before sealing in breathable bags. Inspect stitching monthly for loose threads you can reinforce at home.
